Scene 1
Boy wearing headphones at his desk in his room. He is writing. We can't see what it is. He turns out the desk lamp and goes to his bed. He is wearing pyjamas. He gets into bed and reaching towards the bedside lamp looks at the picture of a woman beside the bed.

'Good night, Mum.' He says. With a click the light goes out.

It's morning. An alarm clock sounds. The camera hasn't moved. We watch him turn the alarm off. He gets out of bed.

Scene 2
We see him leave his house wearing a school uniform. Camera stays where it is. He walks down a path and disappears from view. The sun passes overhead and down for dusk. We see him reappear. He goes into the house.

Scene 3
Boy wearing headphones at his desk in his room. He is writing. We can't see what it is. He turns out the desk lamp and goes to his bed. He is wearing pyjamas. He gets into bed and reaching towards the bedside lamp looks at the picture of a woman beside the bed.

'Good night, Mum.' He says. With a click the light goes out.

It's morning. An alarm clock sounds. The camera hasn't moved. We watch him turn the alarm off. He gets out of bed.

Scene 4
We see him leave his house wearing a school uniform and the ever-present headphones. Camera stays where it is. He walks down a path and disappears from view. The sun passes overhead and down for dusk. We see him reappear. He goes into the house.

Scene 5
Boy wearing headphones at his desk in his room. He is writing. We can't see what it is. He turns out the desk lamp and goes to his bed. He is wearing pyjamas. He gets into bed and reaching towards the bedside lamp looks at the picture of a woman beside the bed.

Scene 6 begins as Scene 2.
Camera follows him this time. He walks along a canal path. There's birdsong. We hear a kitten miaow. He stops. It approaches him. He strokes it. It wraps itself around his legs, purring. He smiles and heads off to school. This is the first time we have seen him smile. Camera stays on the kitten that follows him for a bit and then stops, sits down and licks its paws.

The sun moves overhead. The kitten lays out in the sun. Gets up. Stretches. Saunters off.

Sun moves a bit more. We see him approach and walk past the camera. We follow him and watch him go into the house. He goes into the kitchen where there is a note.

'Dinner's in the fridge. Give it 5 minutes in the microwave. Dad.'

Scene 7 Repeat Scene 1

Scene 8
We follow him downstairs. Into the kitchen, he takes a plate and a fresh bottle of milk and puts them in his satchel.

Scene 9 begins as Scene 2.
Camera follows him this time. He walks along a canal path. There's birdsong. We hear a kitten meow. He stops. It approaches him. He strokes it. It wraps itself around his legs, purring. He takes out the plate and pours some milk into it. The kitten purrs madly, starts lapping at the milk before he has finished pouring. He watches it drink with a smile of his face.

He stands up and heads off to school. Camera stays on the kitten that carries on lapping the milk. Once it has finished, it sits down and licks its paws.

The sun moves overhead. The kitten lays out in the sun. Gets up. Stretches. Saunters off.

Sun moves a bit more. We see him approach and walk past the camera. We follow him and watch him go into the house. He goes into the kitchen where there is a note.

'Dinner's in the fridge. Give it 5 minutes in the microwave. Dad.'

Scene 7 Repeat Scene 1

Scene 8

He takes it in his hands. It is stiff as a board. Crying he holds it for a while and digs a small grave for it with a piece of the broken plate. He stands up. Looks at the grave and heads off back home.

We watch him go into the house. He goes into the kitchen where there is a note.

'Dinner's in the fridge. Give it 5 minutes in the microwave. Dad.'

Scene 12
Boy wearing headphones at his desk in his room. He is writing. We can't see what it is. Leaving the light on he goes to his bed. He is wearing pyjamas. He lies on the bed. We watch a tear go from the corner of his eye and into his ear. The woman in the picture looks at him. Camera returns to his desk. In his diary he has written, 'I hate myself and want to die.'

Scene 13
It's morning. An alarm clock sounds. The camera is on the bed. We watch him turn the alarm off. He gets out of bed.

Scene 14 begins as Scene 2.
Camera follows him this time. He walks along a canal path. There's birdsong. He stops beside the makeshift grave. He hears the words 'Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.' The grave changes to that of his mother, a fresh mound of earth with a tombstone. A tear flows down one cheek. He sets off for school. The sun moves overhead. We see him approach and walk past the camera. We follow him and watch him go into the house. He goes into the kitchen where there is a note.

'Dinner's in the fridge. Give it 5 minutes in the microwave. Dad.'

Scene 15
Boy wearing headphones at his desk in his room. He is writing. We can't see what it is. Leaving the light on he goes to his bed. He is wearing pyjamas. He lies on the bed. We watch a tear go from the corner of his eye and into his ear. The woman in the picture looks at him. Camera returns to his desk. In his diary he has written, 'Help me.'

Scene 16
It's morning. An alarm clock sounds. The camera is on the bed. He doesn't move. Camera moves to the mother's picture. We notice a small bottle. There is a skull a cross bones on it. 'Rat poison' it reads. Camera pans over the room to the desk. We see the book and notice the headphones. The pages rustle and turn in a breeze from the window. Every page reads 'I hate myself and want to die,' Except for the last one. 'Help me,' it reads. Fade to black, alarm clock still ringing.
